A personal reflection of a two-day online conference of the St. Maarten Catholic Education Foundation "Building Relationships between Educators and Students” By Ria Uiterloo April 2022 Some experiences shape you for life. As an 11-year-old, I started at a large Secondary school. I vividly remember a fellow classmate who was hungry early in the morning at 7 a.m. and discreetly took a bite of her sandwich. The French teacher reacted sharply to the situation: "What are you doing? Who eats during class? You have no manners! You are a pig, your mother is a mop and your father is a dishcloth"! The whole class turned to my classmate. She was shocked and sad and so were we. You could hear a pin drop. Nobody spoke in class after that incident. Een persoonlijke reflectie op de tweedaagse online conferentie van Stichting Katholiek Onderwijs St. Maarten ‘Building Relationships between Educators and Students’. Door Ria Uiterloo 5 april 2022 Sommige ervaringen vormen je voor het leven. Als 11-jarige startte ik op een grote school. Een medeklasgenote had honger en nam discreet een hap van haar boterham. De lerares Frans reageerde fel op de situatie: "Wat doe je? Wie eet er nou tijdens de les? Je hebt geen manieren! Je bent een varken, je moeder is een dweil en je vader is een vaatdoek!” De hele klas draaide zich om naar mijn klasgenote. Zij was geschokt en verdrietig en wij ook. Je kon een speld horen vallen. Niemand sprak na dat incident nog tijdens de les. We troostten onze klasgenote de rest van de dag. De recente conferentie bracht trieste episodes uit mijn middelbare schoolleven terug.
